LIVE - The Human Side of Neurorecovery - How can tech help us harness neuroplasticity?

Clinicians are drawn to work in Neuro rehabilitation so they can help people recover as much as possible. Technology has changed the way care is delivered, allowing us to make gains that weren’t previously possible. This session will explore the human side of neurorecovery by looking at a real life case example. The discussion will include the use of technology for tracking and monitoring changes within a rehabilitation program. A case study will be used to illustrate how clinical outcomes were improved with the use of neuro rehab technology.

Use of technology for monitoring and management of patient outcomes: What's on the Horizon?

The COVID-19 pandemic has irreversibly altered the way that patient care is delivered, and accelerated the integration of novel technologies into the practice of medicine. In this talk, we will cover some of the most promising technological approaches to patient care that have recently emerged, as well as actionable strategies about how to create sustainability around these approaches.

Taking a Neurofunctional Approach to Rehab: Making the Connections between Brain, Physical & Mental Health to Improve Outcomes

While a client may have a 'reason for referral' that initiates our clinical engagement, each client assessment is an opportunity to adopt the lens that a neurofunctional approach. The neurofunctional approach provides as a framework to discover what may be disabling and enabling your client's ability to do the things they need and/or want to do in life. Understanding clients' unique strengths and challenges can assist clinicians in building more personalized and targeted treatment plans to empower clients to reach their goals. In this session, we will explore the neurofunctional approach for rehabilitation and health and introduce the Canadian Model of Cognitive Skills to apply to clinical practice, including examples and tips and tools for success.

Integrating Research Into Clinical Practice

Clinical practice has evolved to include best practices based on evidence. Clinicians often want to be involved in research; however, they may not have the knowledge or experience to get started. This session is designed to inspire clinicians to get involved in research within your own clinic. The discussion will provide insight on developing and designing your own study idea within your clinical practice. The steps to running a study will be reviewed and you will get a glimpse at real world research examples in action.

Neuro Tech and the Concussed Athlete

This presentation will describe characteristics of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) encountered in sport and highlight the importance of performing quantitative, objective measures of neurologic function when assessing sport-related concussion. The presentation will also provide examples of managing mTBI in athletic populations using neuro technology.

From the Frontlines - Recognizing Post Acute COVID Syndrome and Rehabilitation Strategies

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only been a healthcare challenge for acute care settings, but has brought a new type of client to our rehabilitation settings - the client with Post Covid Syndrome. This client is struggling with symptoms post COVID that are interfering with their ability to return to their pre-COVID life including work, self-care and leisure activities. This session will help clinicians in identifying Post COVID Syndrome, the basic tenets of care, judicious use of diagnostics, and rehabilitation best practices.

How do we get paid for this stuff?: Health economics and reimbursement for neuro technologies

After spending close to 9 years in the advanced technology industry, travelling globally to visit distributors and customers, there is a global issue regarding reimbursement. Neurological rehabilitation does not gain attention on the grand scale in general hospitals around the world. This is challenging for manufacturers investing in R&D to provide innovation in products to convince top level hospital executives to invest in technology. Heading the Health Economic working group for IISART, I have gained experience on a global scale regarding health economic topics and together we are working on a solution to this challenge. Come and listen, share your experience and together we can make a difference.

Brain Computer Interface: Empowering the Mind for Rehabilitation of the Brain

The capability to "decode the brain" now makes brain controlled interface technology a reality. Neurolutions has created the first DeNovo FDA cleared brain computer interface device for rehabilitation that enables a person with a chronically paralyzed hand to improve function by using brain signals from the uninjured side of their brain. Dr. Eric Leuthardt shares patient stories of use of the IpsiHand device for stroke rehabilitation and provides a glimpse of the future of brain computer interface technology in rehabilitation medicine.
